A series of panel discussions in which women who make a contribution to the wellbeing and positive lives of women in Sandgate and surrounding suburbs discuss some aspects of their life journey. A celebration of women’s lives and the diverse choices, challenges and successes that shape us – discussions to foster connections in our community.
Since its first panel discussion in our series in October 2021, 24 local women have shared with us ‘what made them’ – what events, people, environments built the person they are today.
Our May presenter for Women Weaving Stories is a very experienced story weaver – Bettina Nissen. Bettina has been a storyteller for over forty years working in the field of Early Literacy in libraries, schools and community organisations.
Bettina’s training is in Librarianship and Social Sciences. As a Storyteller, she loves to tell old folk and fairy tales from her Western European heritage. She plays with rhymes and songs and stories to bring these tales alive in a contemporary setting.
We are in for a treat!
For many years Bettina took these stories and rhymes to community arts projects in playgrounds, detention centres, Neighbourhood Houses and respite care centres. Currently Bettina coordinates Paint Dbay REaD, a volunteer led early literacy project, in Deception Bay, Queensland. She is also collaborating with Sandbag Community Association on the “4017 Community – led Recovery” project, with fellow storyteller, Anne E Stewart. They are collecting stories of the 2022 Floods.
