About the Course

Make your own A5 sized nature journal with personalised creative content scattered through blank pages.  During the first two weeks of the course we will explore several simple printing techniques including gelatine monoprinting, trace monoprinting, and stamp carving to create content for the book.  The focus will be on the natural world, including birds, leaves and insects.

The final two weeks will be focused on creating the book itself, bringing together your printed images with a variety of nature-themed pages including old text pages, handmade papers, poetry, and drawings/sketches.   The inclusion of blank pages in your journal will enable you to use the book for nature journaling, note taking and sketching in your future field excursions.

Materials:    A materials list will be provided upon booking, and there are a few materials to be provided by your tutor at a small additional cost.

Experience/prerequisites: Suitable for aged 16+ participants who are beginners to intermediate level. Good manual dexterity is required for Journal making.

About the tutor

Sandra Pearce is a Brisbane-based maker of artist books, printed images and paper installations.   Personal experiences in nature are integral to her arts practice, as well as science-based research and creative writing techniques.   Her art practice responds to ideas relating to nature-human conflicts, the impacts of urbanisation and the human manipulation of landscape.

Sandra has exhibited widely in both regional and private art galleries, with several solo exhibitions.  Her artist books have been acquired by the State Library of Queensland for their artist book collection and she was a finalist in the 2016 Libris Awards: Australian Artists Book Prize. Sandra has completed several artist-in-residence community programs, including Curtin Springs Cattle Station in Central Australia and Cataract Gorge in Tasmania.
