DRAWING the FEMALE FIGURE with FEELING with MARILYN CASS
Creative Sundays at Womenspace 11 & 18 August 2024 10am-1pm
“I long to light up people’s souls through my art – by creating their portrait, teaching them to draw, or through forming some sort of emotional connection. I love the rawness and honesty of charcoal, and its versatility – the perfect medium to reflect human nature.
From my childhood in Rockhampton, Qld, I have been fascinated with, and influenced by, the Renaissance masters, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. I love to create portraits and life drawings that reflect the unique beauty of the sitter. Consequently, I have exhibited in four joint exhibitions, won some art prizes and have numerous artworks in private and public collections.
My artistic journey has led me to illustrate two children’s books, create digital illustrations for learning resources, and teach workshops on: Drawing Basics, Basic Anatomy, Life Drawing and Portraits. I continue to do commissioned portraits.
I aim to spread harmony, peace and wonder through all my interactions, and to create a special connection with people who engage in my artistic experiences.”

Drawing the human figure accurately requires a lot of knowledge and understanding of its form and framework.
Therefore, Marilyn offers two workshops:
Workshop #1 on 11 August – Basic Human Anatomy
Workshop #2 on 18 August – Using Charcoal
with recommendation to attend both workshops to get the most out of this opportunity. However, those who are quite confident with drawing the human figure already, might enrol only in the second one.
Workshop #1 – Basic Human Anatomy (Proportions and Gestures)
Exercises to break down barriers and build confidence in drawing.
Going through basic anatomy and interesting proportions of the human body, differences between the male and female bodies.
Interpretation of different poses into simple ‘gesture drawings’. A gesture drawing captures the action, form and pose of a person with minimal lines and detail, typically within 1-5 minutes.
With these skills and knowledge, we develop accuracy and confidence in drawing the human figure.
Note: We will be using charcoal in a basic way. It can be a bit messy and awkward at first, but worth the learning curve.
Workshop #2 – Using Charcoal (to Create Form and Feeling)
Building on the skills and knowledge learned in Workshop 1, you will learn about the amazing medium of charcoal and how to manipulate it to create tone, depth and emotion.
All the acquired skills will help to draw a female figure that is life-like and expressive, in everyone’s own particular style.
A selection of nude, female reference pictures to choose from will be supplied. Marilyn will help each participant to create a rendered version, in charcoal, on A3 paper.
