The last two months were busy are Womenspace – the next seven weeks will be busier as we are preparing for the 25th Anniversary Celebration of WOMENSPACE on the weekend of 24-25 September – PLEASE MARK YOUR DIARY.
Saturday will be Open House – to sit and share stories in the garden with a cuppa and view the indoor installation of our history and current achievements.
The main event is programmed for Sunday afternoon with various presentations and unveiling of our outdoor SPIRAL MURAL.
You will hear from us closer to the event, but please, mark your diary so you won’t double book yourself: Sunday 25 September 2022 – exactly 25 years since Womenspace’s First Meeting.
Last Sunday we participated in the Einbunpin Festival that started even earlier than we did – 30 years ago!
We are so delighted – almost all our clay pods (towards our SPIRAL MURAL) were decorated, a lot of handouts distributed, good conversations with locals took place, some very happy raffle winners went home at the end of the day, and possible future workshops for September were discussed – so a very good day and we are looking forward to the 31st Einbunpin!
Many thanks to our volunteering members: Ann, Bernadette, Jane, Julie, KayDee, Kaye, Kim, Kylie, Lyn, Rhyll, and the supporters Archie, Michael and Phillip.
Thank you to Stirling Hinchliffe MP for donating the raffle prize – a $50 voucher towards cinema tickets. It will be enjoyed by a family with two kids who decorated some of our clay-pods and returned to our stall, full of smiles to collect the voucher and chocolates.
Our Stories: Our Voices achieved the goal set up by the participating Jabiru students – the entry of their short film ‘Backstage’ to STUFFit film festival was submitted on time and Sandgate Guide included an article in the August issue (pg 26) https://www.sandgateguide.com.au/eguide/
Womenspace will host a long table dinner and screening of this short film for participants of the project and their parents/friends later in August. ‘Backstage’ will be included in our celebration program on 24-25 September.
Women Weaving Stories gathered so far great presenters, facilitated by Ann Ingamells. By now Ann invited 17 local women to tell their stories, we think the 9th in the series is probably high time for her to sit in the presenter’s chair and experience herself how to convey a lifetime of ups and downs, both as a human being, a mum, a professional, a citizen, and all those other things we are and do. Join us at Women Weaving Stories on Friday 12th August – it’s a full moon eve as well!
Griffith University recommended to us a social work student for placement and we are delighted we accepted this recommendation – Kim started to work with us in July, many of you would have met her by now. She is working with us on the anniversary event, helps to build our Green P relationship, assists with the Young Women Project and with grant applications for future funding. Kim will be with us till November and we hope by then she will become addicted to this place and stay as a member/volunteer!
Fiona Jones left Womenspace to a full time job. We wish her very best in her new chapter and welcome our new Office Coordinator KayDee Dickson who stepped into the role quickly. We are pleased with her interest in working with us as she had already some experience with Womenspace from the past. KayDee’s working hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am – 1pm. Her work responsibilities and the fact that she is the tenant at our unit just next door to the office will be respected to maintain a healthy and ongoing relationship. Warm welcome, KayDee!
The weekly and monthly workshops and gathering are progressing well.
The Writing Workshop returned for July/August series – for more information see https://www.facebook.com/WomenspaceAust
The Sandgate Zen Buddhist Group led by Georgia Farrell (a Zen Buddhist Priest Rev. Doshi Koku) started meditations at WOMENSPACE every Tuesday (but the 1st one of the month) from 6.30 – 7.30pm – more information at https://sandgatezenmeditationgroup.com/
While we lost the Yoga sessions on Monday and Tuesday we are looking for new possibilities.
We welcome new initiatives and ‘one-off’ gatherings or events like the recent and very successful workshop with local artist Kim Mancini.
